Meaning

Major hip throw

Pronunciation

oh-goh-shee

Understand the technique

is a major hip throw: brings forward, turns the hip fully across uke's front, and rotates uke over that close hip line. The hips and whole-body turn transmit the throw; the arms keep the direction and connection.

How it works

Create a close entry

Draw uke forward with before turning in. Bring the hips close across uke's front with bent knees, so there is no gap in which uke can stay upright or step away.

Turn the whole body through

Keep the posture tall as the hips turn and the arms guide uke forward and around. The throw continues as one rotation over the hip line rather than a pull downward with the arms.

Common mistakes

A gap at the hip

If tori turns too far away or bends at the waist, uke does not meet a usable hip line and the load shifts to the lower back. Enter closer and turn with the legs and hips instead.

First learning focus

First establish forward balance and a close, upright hip position. Only then connect the arms and body into one continuous turning direction.
