Meaning

Floating hip throw

Pronunciation

oo-kee-goh-shee

Understand the technique

is a floating hip throw in which draws forward, makes a light hip connection, and turns them over the hip line. The throw comes from connected rotation and direction, not from lifting uke onto the hip.

How it works

Move uke before turning

Use the grips to create forward and lead uke into the turning line. When uke is still balanced squarely over both feet, the hip cannot guide the movement smoothly.

Connect lightly and rotate

Turn in close enough for the hip to cross uke's front without trying to load them high. Keep the torso upright, continue the pull in a circle, and let the rotation carry uke over the hip line into .

Common mistakes

Lifting or folding forward

Trying to raise uke with the back removes the floating, turning action and makes tori collapse forward. Keep the hip contact light, the knees responsive, and the throwing direction around the body.

First learning focus

First feel the sequence of forward balance, close turn, and continuous rotation. A light, connected turn is more important than making the hip carry uke's weight.
