Judo technique
Harai-goshi
Learn the sweeping hip throw through lift, turn, and a rising leg action.

Understand the technique
is a sweeping hip throw. lifts toward a front corner, turns the hip fully across, and sweeps uke's support backward and upward while the torso continues forward.
How it works
Lift and turn fully
Take uke's balance toward the front corner and bring the lifting elbow beneath the armpit. Turn the hip close across uke's front while keeping the posture long enough to carry the upward direction.
Sweep with the whole body
Swing the outside leg backward and upward against uke's support as the torso inclines forward. The lifting grip, hip turn, leg sweep, and torso direction complete as one continuous action.
Common mistakes
Kicking without a lifting turn
A separate leg kick cannot move uke safely over the hip and often loses balance. Establish the lifted front-corner line and close hip turn before the leg rises.
First learning focus
First connect the lifting elbow to a full, close hip turn. Add a small backward and upward leg sweep only when it reinforces the same rising direction.
