Understand the technique

Distinguish a side sacrifice with ankle contact from a standing sweep.

How it works

Movement and direction

For right , draws balance toward the little-toe edge of Uke’s right foot. Tori’s left sole contacts below the outside of Uke’s right ankle, displacing that support as Tori falls onto the left side. The hands continue to support and guide Uke through the side fall; mirror on the left. Unlike a standing , Tori’s own side sacrifice is part of the throw. Do not kick into the knee or wrench a planted leg sideways.

Common mistakes

Common error

Kicking the ankle while remaining upright misses the connected sacrifice action.
