Judo technique
Uchi-mata-sukashi
Recognize a hand-directed answer to a missed Uchi-mata.

Understand the technique
In , the defender uses the missed attacking leg as the opening for continued hand direction.
How it works
Clear the attacking leg
Uke attacks right Uchi-mata. Tori, now performing the counter, withdraws the threatened left leg and clears the hips while retaining the grips.
Redirect the remaining rotation
After the leg misses, guide Uke forward with the hands. The opposite side mirrors the example. Do not reap the attacker’s supporting leg from inside while behind them.
Common mistakes
Removing the support
Avoidance acts on the threatened space, not by attacking the supporting leg from behind. Keep this distinction explicit when comparing counters.
First learning focus
Identify the original attacker, the missed leg, and the hands directing the counter.
