Uchi-mata

Distinguish Uchi-mata’s inner leg path from Harai-goshi.

Uchi-mata: Observe the leg path between Uke’s legs.
Technique image: Observe the defining contact and direction in Uchi-mata. The text describes a right-sided example; the opposite side mirrors it.

Understand the technique

The useful comparison for is the leg path: the rising leg and forward hand direction act together inside Uke’s stance.

How it works

Open the front corner

In the right-sided example, draw Uke toward the front corner before turning. Keep the grip connection as the hips move into the entry.

Coordinate the inner path

The right leg rises between Uke’s legs toward the inner thigh as the torso directs forward. Mirror the sides for the opposite example; never dive head-first.

Common mistakes

An outside swing

Swinging outside the legs loses the distinguishing Uchi-mata path. Compare with before increasing the movement.

First learning focus

Observe where the leg passes and whether the hands continue the same forward direction.
