Judo technique
Sumi-gaeshi
Recognize instep-to-thigh contact in a rear sacrifice.

Understand the technique
The connection in comes from sitting close enough that the lifting instep and backward roll stay coordinated.
How it works
Establish the thigh contact
In the right example, step the left foot between Uke’s feet and connect the right instep inside Uke’s left thigh as Uke moves forward.
Roll from a close seat
Sit close to the left heel and guide Uke over the corner with the hands and lifting foot. Mirror the sides on the left; guide a roll without driving the head into the mat.
Common mistakes
Sitting too far away
A distant seat disconnects the foot from the thigh and makes the hands drag rather than guide.
First learning focus
Notice the distance between the seat and supporting heel before the backward roll.
