Sasae-tsuri-komi-ashi

Distinguish a low foot block from Hiza-guruma’s higher contact.

Sasae-tsuri-komi-ashi: Compare the low foot contact with Hiza-guruma’s knee-level block.

Understand the technique

Timing distinguishes : the low block meets a step before the foot takes full weight.

How it works

Invite the forward step

In the right example, Tori draws Uke’s right foot forward and places the left sole at Uke’s ankle or instep before the step settles.

Lift and turn around the block

Coordinate the low stop with lifting and turning hand action so Uke rotates forward. The left-sided example mirrors the right.

Common mistakes

Blocking a settled foot

Waiting until the step is fully weighted loses the moving opportunity. Notice the approaching foot instead of pushing against a settled stance.

First learning focus

Watch when the stepping foot is stopped and whether the hands continue lifting and turning.
