Hiza-guruma

Recognize the knee wheel as a block rather than a reap.

Hiza-guruma: Observe the contact below the knee and the circular upper-body direction.
Technique image: Observe the defining contact and direction in Hiza-guruma. The text describes a right-sided example; the opposite side mirrors it.

Understand the technique

The wheel in comes from upper-body direction around a blocked step.

How it works

Contact below the knee

For the right-sided example, Tori’s left sole contacts Uke’s right leg just below the kneecap while Uke is drawn toward the right front corner.

Wheel over the stopped step

The hands turn Uke’s upper body over the blocked leg. The opposite side mirrors the example; keep the block controlled without sideways force into the knee.

Common mistakes

Kicking instead of blocking

The foot stops a step; it does not knock the knee away. If the action becomes a kick, return to the contact point and hand direction.
