Judo term
Kiken-gachi
- Pronunciation
- kee-ken gah-chee
- Meaning
- Win by withdrawal
In Judo
Kiken-gachi is a win by withdrawal. It is awarded when the opponent withdraws or cannot continue, for example after a medical assessment. In injury cases, whether Kiken-gachi applies also depends on the cause and the applicable rules.
How to recognize it
Look for a contest that ends because one athlete withdraws or, after the doctor’s assessment, cannot continue, rather than because of a score or a penalty.
Don't mix it up
Withdrawal versus technical score
wins through a technique, such as a throw, hold-down, or submission. Kiken-gachi wins because the opponent does not or cannot continue.
Withdrawal versus disqualification
ends the contest because of a serious infringement or a third Shido. Kiken-gachi involves no penalty.
